Towns Protocol is a decentralized, blockchain-based communication infrastructure enabling the creation of on-chain programmable group chats called Spaces. It empowers users with secure, token-gated, and fully owned digital communities, akin to Discord or WhatsApp, but without central control.

Towns operates through a system of decentralized Spaces, on-chain chat communities minted as unique entities. Each Space is fully programmable by its creator, who controls access, membership rules, pricing, and monetization logic via a governance token. To participate, users must hold a valid membership token, which can be based on ERC-20 tokens, NFTs, or specific wallet conditions. These tokens help enforce access rights and sustain the network through protocol fees. The architecture is built on the Base Layer-2 network (an Ethereum scaling solution), while messaging is handled by encrypted off-chain stream nodes, enabling secure, scalable communication without compromising privacy.

The native TOWNS token is an ERC-20 asset with a capped supply of approximately 15.33 billion. It powers staking (to support node operators), access (for joining Spaces or earning rewards), and decentralized governance via the Towns Lodge DAO. Towns features an annual inflation model, where newly minted tokens are bridged to Base and distributed through a public contract.
