What Is io.net (IO) and How Does It Work?
io.net (IO) is a decentralized GPU compute network built to power artificial intelligence, machine learning, and other high-performance workloads. Instead of relying on centralized cloud providers, io.net aggregates idle GPUs from data centers, crypto miners, and individuals, making them available through a shared marketplace. This approach lowers barriers for developers and delivers access to scalable compute resources at significantly reduced costs compared to traditional providers.
The network operates on a decentralized physical infrastructure (DePIN) model. GPU providers contribute their hardware, while developers and enterprises rent this compute power for training or inference tasks. A smart orchestration layer matches jobs to the most suitable GPUs, ensuring performance, uptime, and reliability. Providers are rewarded in IO tokens, while staking and slashing mechanisms keep the system secure and efficient.
The IO token is central to the ecosystem. It is used for payments, rewards, staking, and governance, with a capped total supply of 800 million tokens. When Did io.net Launch?
io.net (IO) traces its roots to IO Research, founded to build decentralized infrastructure for AI. The project raised a $30 million Series A in March 2024 to accelerate development and deploy its GPU network. The IO token’s Token Generation Event (TGE) occurred on June 11, 2024, via a Binance Launchpool listing.
Over time, leadership evolved: co-founder Tory Green initially served as COO and later CEO in mid-2024, and in April 2025 he transitioned to Chair of the io.net Foundation while Gaurav Sharma (formerly CTO) became CEO to drive the next phase.

What Is the IO Token Used for?
The IO token is the native utility asset of the io.net ecosystem. It serves as the medium of exchange for paying GPU providers, rewarding node operators, and covering network fees. Users stake IO to secure the network and ensure reliability, while slashing mechanisms penalize poor performance.
The token also underpins governance, giving holders a voice in network upgrades and future roadmap decisions. As adoption of decentralized AI compute grows, IO’s role as both a payment and incentive layer makes it central to io.net’s long-term value proposition.

What Is io.net Tokenomics?
The IO token has a fixed maximum supply of 800 million, ensuring long-term scarcity. At launch, 500 million tokens were minted as the genesis supply, while the remaining 300 million will be emitted over time as rewards for GPU providers and stakers. Distribution follows a 20-year schedule, with hourly reward emissions starting at around 8% annual inflation in Year 1 and gradually decreasing by ~1.02% each month until the cap is reached.
To balance supply growth, io.net also uses a programmatic burn mechanism, where part of the network’s revenue is used to buy back and burn IO. The burn amount is adjusted dynamically based on IO’s price, creating deflationary pressure and aligning incentives between compute users, providers, and token holders. This system ensures that the token remains central to payments, rewards, and governance in the network.
How Does io.net Compare to Other DePIN Projects?
While many DePIN networks focus on storage, connectivity, or heterogeneous compute, io.net is uniquely GPU-centric: it’s built specifically for AI, ML and high-performance workloads. That specialization enables tighter optimization for GPU clusters, task orchestration (using Ray), and workload matching, rather than trying to support a broad spectrum of infrastructure types. In contrast, projects like Akash Network and Render support a mix of CPU and GPU tasks (or more general compute), often via a marketplace/auction model that can lead to variability in pricing and resource allocation.
