North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson said the state has reached what he called a historic settlement with Chemours over years of dumping toxic chemicals into the Cape Fear River. Jackson said the company will pay North Carolina nearly $600 million, with the total coming in at about $590 million. He said about $380 million will go to local governments and $75 million to the state’s PFAS cleanup fund. Jackson added the agreement includes a $135 million reserve fund, with DuPont responsible for ensuring clean drinking water if Chemours goes bankrupt.
