The Moonbirds project is a well-known NFT series launched in April 2022 by the PROOF Collective, founded by Kevin Rose (co-founder of Digg). It consists of 10,000 generative PFP (profile picture) NFTs featuring pixel-art style owls, with a clean and distinctive aesthetic designed by Justin Mezzell. Each Moonbird has unique rarity-based traits (such as clothing, expressions, accessories, etc.), was minted at 2.5 ETH, sold out quickly, and achieved over $300 million in secondary market trading volume, making it one of the most successful debut projects in NFT history and widely regarded as a blue-chip NFT. In 2024, PROOF was acquired by Yuga Labs (the team behind Bored Ape Yacht Club).
